Leney, who joined the firm in February 2012, is from Malaysia. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of London and a Certificate in Legal Practice from the University of Malaya. He was admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in March 1995 and in July 2009, he was admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam. Leney is now a partner of Messrs AIP Law.

Leney’s main area of practice is in dispute resolution and he has vast experience in attending to debt recovery, hire purchase, foreclosure proceedings, bankruptcy proceedings, winding-up and execution proceedings involving institutional clients.

Another area of Leney’s practice is in the medico-legal field where he has provided legal advice and representation covering a range of professional issues, such as medical malpractice and negligence claims and also disciplinary hearings.

Leney had acted for a corporation with regards to tracing of monies deposited in the hands of third parties for gambling purposes, industrial and labour law matters, advised clients on family disputes and the drawing up of wills, criminal matters, conveyancing and has also advised clients on corporate agreements, share transactions and security documentation for banks, financial institutions and corporations. He was also involved extensively in the negotiations and subsequent drafting of a Deed of Settlement between shareholders in respect of companies and assets worth in excess of RM50 million.

Leney had the opportunity to represent a current Ruler of a Malaysian state as a co-counsel. He has also advised clients on tender and procurement contracts and also in respect of disputes arising from them. Leney was also involved extensively in the negotiations and subsequent drafting of a settlement agreement between a shipping company and a ship-building and ship-repair company.

Leney had also represented a local financial institution in a foreclosure proceeding in respect of a claim exceeding B$22 million and was involved in defending a company in a claim for over B$9 million filed against them. He was also involved extensively in the implementation of the transfer of the insurance business of one of the major insurance companies in Brunei.

Leney has been involved in the area of shipping law and admiralty practice and has advised and acted for clients in various types of maritime related disputes including ship arrests, charterparty disputes and cargo claims.

Leney is currently the Honorary Legal Advisor for the Malaysian Association, Brunei, the Malayali Association of Brunei and for the Industry HSE Group, a society for the Employers to promote Workplace Safety and Health issues in Brunei. He also sits on the Board of Governors of St. George’s School, Bandar Seri Begawan.
